Essential tips for learning the anterior pituitary hormones

A (very) brief review Learning the anterior pituitary hormones for your biology class or the MCAT can be a little overwhelming. It is easy to get lost in the weeds and struggle to see how it all connects. One thing that helped me when I was learning the anterior pituitary hormones was to visualize the connections between the most important structures. This both helped me to memorize their function and to see how changes in one part of the pathway may have downstream effects. I often have students practice the pituitary hormones by filling in a simplified blank diagram of the hormones and where they act. Included in this blog post is a very brief overview of the anterior pituitary hormone system, a blank and completed worksheet for learning the names of the hormones and how they fit into the bigger picture, and a brief review of a couple of useful mneumonics. A (very) brief review The hypothalamus is the bridge between the nervous and endocrine systems. The hypothalamus regulates the anterior pituitary gland through the release of tropic hormones into the hypophyseal portal system, which directly connects the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary. When a hormone from the hypothalamus arrives at the anterior pituitary, it will regulate the gland by either triggering or blocking the release of an anterior pituitary hormone. Once a hormone is released from the anterior pituitary, it will go on to act on other endocrine tissues (in the case of tropic hormones) or to act directly on some other part of the body (in the case of direct hormones). Mneumuonic Once you know the anterior pituitary hormones, it is often easy to learn the names of the rest of the steps in that hormone pathway. Here is a mneumonic that can be used to memorize the anterior pituitary hormones: FLAT PEG FLAT PEG: FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), LH (Leutinizing Hormone), ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone), TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), Prolactin, Endophins, and Growth Hormones. This mnemonic is also useful because it can help you remember which hormones belong to which class. There are two important classes of hormones: tropic (hormones that act on other endocrine glands) and direct (hormones that act directly on some other, non-endocrine, part of the body). The FLAT hormones are all tropic hormones (you can remember this by picturing a flat, tropical beach) and the PEG hormones are direct (you can remember this because you can picture a peg going directly into a piece of wood). Additionally, the FLAT, or tropic hormones, are often referred to by acronyms (FSH, LH, ACTH, TSH), while the PEG, or direct hormones, are usually referred to by their full names. Practice worksheet Here is a practice worksheet starting with the hormones released by the hypothalamus. Feel free to screenshot these images and print them to practice with! ***FSH and LH serve different functions in men and women Note: the full pathway for the release of endorphins is too complex to fit into this brief review. For most introductory courses it will be sufficient to know what is included on this chart. Good luck and happy studying! Study Guide for Man and Superman

Arguably George Bernard Shaw’s most profound play, Man and Superman, blends social satire with a fascinating philosophy. Today, the comedy continues to make readers and audiences laugh and think — sometimes simultaneously. Man and Superman tells the story of two rivals: John Tanner (a wealthy, politically-minded intellectual who values his freedom) and Ann Whitefield (a charming, scheming hypocritical young woman who wants Tanner as a husband). Once Tanner realizes that Miss Whitefield is hunting for a spouse (and that he is the only target), he attempts to flee, only to find out that his attraction to Ann is too overwhelming to escape. Re-inventing Don Juan Although many of Shaw’s plays were financial successes, not all of the critics admired his work. While many reviewers were intrigued by Shaw’s ideas, they did not appreciate his lengthy scenes of dialogue with little-to-no conflict. One such critic, Arthur Bingham Walkley once said that Shaw is â€Å"no dramatist at all.† In the late 1800s, Walkley suggested that Shaw should write a Don Juan play. Beginning in 1901, Shaw accepted the challenge; in fact, he wrote an extensive albeit sarcastic dedication to Walkley, thanking him for the inspiration. In the preface of Man and Superman, Shaw discusses the way Don Juan has been portrayed in other works, such as Mozart’s opera or Lord Byron’s poetry. Traditionally, Don Juan is a pursuer of women, an adulterer, and an unrepentant scoundrel. At the end of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Don Juan is dragged to Hell, leaving Shaw to wonder: What happened to Don Juan’s soul? Man and Superman provides an answer to that question. The spirit of Don Juan lives on in the form of Juan’s distant-descendant John Tanner. Instead of a pursuer of women, Tanner is a pursuer of truth. Instead of an adulterer, Tanner is a revolutionary. Instead of a scoundrel, Tanner defies social norms and old-fashioned traditions in hopes of leading the way to a better world. Yet, the theme of seduction — typical in all incarnations of Don Juan stories — is still present. Through each act of the play, the female lead, Ann Whitefield, aggressively pursues her prey. Below is a brief summary of the play. Man and Superman - Act One Ann Whitefield’s father has passed away. Mr. Whitefield’s will indicate that his daughter’s guardians shall be two gentlemen: Roebuck Ramsden: The steadfast (and rather old-fashioned) friend of the family.John Tanner: A controversial author and â€Å"Member of the Idle Rich Class† The problem: Ramsden cannot stand Tanner’s morals, and Tanner cannot stand the idea of being Ann’s guardian. To complicate things, Tanner’s friend Octavius â€Å"Tavy† Robinson is head over heels in love with An. He hopes that the new guardianship will improve his chances of winning her heart. Ann flirts harmlessly whenever she is around Tavy. However, when she is alone with John Tanner (AKA â€Å"Jack†) her intentions become obvious to the audience. She wants Tanner. Whether she wants him because she loves him, or because she is infatuated with him, or merely because desires his wealth and status is entirely up to the viewer’s opinion. When Tavy’s sister Violet enters, a romantic subplot is introduced. Rumor has it that Violet is pregnant and unmarried. Ramsden and Octavius are outraged and ashamed. Tanner congratulates Violet. He believes that she is simply following life’s natural impulses, and he approves the instinctive way Violet has pursued her goals despite society’s expectations. Violet can tolerate the moral objections of her friends and family. She cannot, however, abide Tanner’s praise. She admits that she is legally married, but that the identity of her groom must remain secret. Act One of Man and Superman concludes with Ramsden and the others apologizing. Jack Tanner is disappointed; he wrongly thought that Violet has shared his moral/philosophical outlook. Instead, realizes the bulk of society is not ready to challenge traditional institutions such as marriage. The Last Line of Act One Tanner: You must cower before the wedding ring like the rest of us, Ramsden. The cup of our ignominy is full.

Abortion An Argument Of Moral Idealism - 1650 Words

Abortion is one of the most heavily debated subject matters in the United States today. Most people characterize themselves as either â€Å"pro-life† or â€Å"pro choice† depending on their position of morality. The Hillerman Hotel Case Study Essay Example

The Hillerman Hotel Case Study Essay Problem 1: What to do with the property? The first problem in the case is deciding what to do with the property. The owners have the option of selling the hotel or keeping it open for business. This problem is time sensitive because new competitors are entering the market rapidly. â€Å"Approximately 28 hotels were under construction and an additional 25 in permit stages for a total of 53 projects under development†. (Cornsun amp; Enz, p. 1). The Hillerman Hotel Executive Board will need to choose an option soon. The tool/concept that will be used to solve this problem is the hold and maintain strategy. The essence of this strategy is a good defense, which makes it harder for new firms to enter and for challengers to gain ground, lowers the probability of attack, lessens the intensity of attack, or diverts attack to less threatening arenas (Popescu, 2008, p. ). The purpose of the hold and maintain strategy is to protect the company’s position in the industry by strength ening competencies. After reading the case and looking at the business life cycle, which is the movement of a firm through stages of development, growth, expansion, maturity, saturation, and decline (Business Life Cycle), this company is in the mature phase and is doing very well. Although it is a seller’s market, there is no reason to sell a high performing business, at this point, that will prove to still be a top competitor in the industry. The hold and maintain strategy should be used by businesses who are leaders and dominant in their field. History Of Baseball Essays - Origins Of Baseball, Town Ball

History Of Baseball Essays - Origins Of Baseball, Town Ball History Of Baseball The History of Baseball Deeply embedded in the folklore of American sports is the story of baseball's supposed invention by a young West Point cadet, Abner Doubleday, in the summer of 1839 at the village of Cooperstown, New York. Because of the numerous types of baseball, or rather games similar to it, the origin of the game has been disputed for decades by sports historians all over the world. In 1839, in Cooperstown, New York, Doubleday supposedly started the great game of baseball. Doubleday, also a famous Union general in the Civil War, was said to be the inventor of baseball by Abner Graves, an elderly miner from New York. In response to the question of where baseball first originated, major league owners summoned a committee in 1907. Abner Graves stepped before the committee and gave his testimony. In Graves' account of the first game, the Otsego Academy and Cooperstown's Green's Select School played against one another in 1839. Committeeman Albert G. Spalding, the founder of Spalding's Sporting Goods , favored Graves' declaration and convinced the other committeemen that Graves' account was true. As a result, in 1939, the committee and the State of New York named Cooperstown and Abner Doubleday as the birthplace and inventor of baseball, respectively. Today, many baseball historians still doubt the testimony of Abner Graves. Historians say the story came from the creative memory of one very old man and was spread by a superpatriotic sporting goods manufacturer, determined to prove that baseball was a wholly American invention. According to Doubleday's diary, he was not playing baseball in Cooperstown, but attending school at West Point on that day in 1839. Also, historians have found that nowhere in Doubleday's diary has he ever claimed to have had anything to do with baseball, and may never have even seen a game. This leads many to the conclusion that Abner Doubleday did not invent baseball, but it is still a disputed and provocative issue. Sports historians have presented impressive evidence showing that American baseball, far from being an independent invention, evolved out of various ball-and-stick games that had been played in many areas of the world since the beginnings of recorded history. But in early America, precursors of baseball included informal games of English origin such as paddleball, trap ball, rounders, and town ball. The latter was a popular game in colonial New England and was played by adults and children with a bat and ball on an open field. Printed references to base ball in America date back to the eighteenth century. Among these accounts is one of Albigence Waldo, a surgeon with Washington's troops at Valley Forge who poetically told of soldiers batting balls and running bases in their free time. Similarly in 1834 Robin Carver's Book of Sports related that an American version of rounders called base or goal ball was rivaling cricket in popularity among Americans. Indeed, cricket played a role in the evolution of organized baseball. From this British game came umpires and innings, and early baseball writers like Henry Chadwick used cricket terminology such as batsman, playing for the side, and excellent field in describing early baseball games. Likewise, the pioneer baseball innovator Harry Wright, a cricket professional turned baseball manager, drew heavily on his cricket background in promoting baseball as a professional team sport in the United States. By the 1840s various forms of baseball vied for acceptance, including the popular Massachusetts and New York versions of the game. The Massachusetts game utilized an irregular four-sided field of play, with the four bases located at fixed, asymmetrical distances from each other and the striker's, or batter's position away from the home base. Scouts, or fielders, put men out by fielding a batted ball on the fly or on the first bounce, or by hitting a runner with a thrown ball. But this lively version of the game was overshadowed in the late 1840s by the New York game, a popular version of which was devised by the members of the New York Knickerbocker Club. Organized in 1845 by a band of aspiring gentlemen and baseball enthusiasts, the Knickerbocker version was devised by one of their members, Alexander J. Cartwright. Cartwright prescribed a diamond-shaped

Critical Incident in Healthcare Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Critical Incident in Healthcare - Essay Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that nurses were not always viewed strictly as providers of care with a minor comfort support position, essentially less-trained doctors. Rather, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, comfort provision was a key part of nurse care. Part of this may have been the domestication of nurse's roles and the association of nursing with femininity, but there was also a recognition of a holistic need for provision of comfort and care as well as treatment: â€Å"[T]here was nothing concerning the comfort of a patient that was small enough to ignore†. Nursing wasn't just concerned with mechanically providing food, cleaning, and other specific services, but with general well-being. In an era where cures were few and far between, providing comfort became the nurse's unique role. But since then, the improvement both of cures and of pain medication has made it so that nurses view their comfort role purely physically and mechanically. In the 19th and 2 0th centuries, nurses did not discuss treatment with patients because this was the role of the physician. While the change away from this norm is undoubtedly both more socially appropriate and just and more medically sensible, one good consequence of this norm was that nurses were de facto mental health care providers, giving patients emotional as well as physical comfort. That soup that day and this critical incident analysis teach me that the provision of comfort and attending to the needs of patients are vital. Hospitals are scary to many people: They feel deeply averred by sterile environments, other sick people, and an area where people often come to die. Provision of comfort is necessary to avoid deterring people from seeking medical care entirely. Resource management is vital to health care. Critical incident reports help guide those analyses. But most critical incident reports, while not looking solely at â€Å"death† and using a wide variety of indices and approaches , tend to focus purely on negative outcomes such as accidents. While critical incident reports should tend to take this approach, there is little point in focusing exclusively and perpetually on what was done wrong, what mistakes were made and what miscalculations were engaged in. Analysing success stories and proper provision in some vein, with the same techniques, is essential to resource management: One has to know where to put resources, not just where not to. Resource management in health care improves the provision and efficiency of health care through the following means: 1. Directly improving the efficiency and effectiveness of resources allocated to patients and therefore directly improving patient health.

Holywood Studio System Between 1940s and 1960s Essay

Holywood Studio System Between 1940s and 1960s - Essay Example This was because there was discovery of the telescope, a cure for arthritis and even new advancements in astronomy. 2 With all these factors going so well for America; Hollywood home, one would presume that there would be greater opportunities for the studio system. However, this did not happen. 3 The main reasons were that there was a shift from cinema to television4, there was also politics involved and also other managerial and technological reasons came into play. 5 Details of these factors shall be examined below. In the wake of the country's economic boom, many people could now afford to purchase their own television sets. 6This meant that there was no need for any of them to go to the movies. By the year 1946, cinema attendance had diminished by a whooping 20 million consumers. 7 The studio that felt the highest pinch was the leader at that time; MGM. Before the decline in the Hollywood studio system, most studios were producing about eighteen billion dollars in revenue. However, after the popularisation of television, most studios were now making a mere four billion dollars. 8 There were also other political reasons that affected the Hollywood Studio system in the late forties. Prior to the decline, most studio owners or movie producers had exclusive rights to movie theatres. The five major studios in Hollywood (Fox, Warner's, Paramount, RKO and Lowe's) 9 had the ability to control distribution of their movies through these vested interests in movie theatres. However, The US Justice Department felt that that monopoly was going against the rules of free market and fair competition. 10Therefore, the Attorney General serving at that time gave a notice to the five major studios to appear in court. They were charged with conspiracy in the theatre industry. They were not supposed to control distribution as stated by the government and they were expected to let go of their vested interests in theatres During their appearances in court, top studio executives agreed to surrender their vested interests in the distribution sector and just after a short while all the big five studios gave up their rights to the movie theatres. 11Most of theses theatres were then sold to other vested interests. Consequently, studio producers had very little revenue to give their actors. Before selling away their theatres, most studios would contract actors for a period of seven years. But after the decline of theatres and studios, it was difficult to make such contracts anymore. Most studios started getting into deficits and they started closing down. 12These results came into play during the sixties. Eventually, the legacy of the Hollywood Studio system came to an end during those fateful years. Rise of independent movie producers During the 1960s more and more movie producers would choose locations that were outside Hollywood. They would prefer other countries such as England, Rome and Pinewood. Consequently, most of the equipments needed in studios were exported to the outdoors. This seriously affected the studio system as movie producers no longer considered the studio system as the norm. 13 The situation was made worse by increased competition from some independent movie producers. These movie producers were affiliated to their own movie producing companies and made the Hollywood studio system seem traditional. The

International Business Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

International Business Management - Essay Example Governments, therefore, have to use more sophisticated means of extending assistance to the domestic industry and such assistance is required to produce results in the form of a viable industry because it is unfair to the national taxpayer or the consumer to continue to suffer if domestic industry cannot compete at least in the domestic market, if not the global markets. Although there are provisions in the WTO Safeguards Agreements which, because of their broad language, may be used by a national government to impose tariffs if the domestic industry is likely to suffer serious injury, such loopholes are likely to become more difficult to use in the future because of new consensus that is already emerging to close them. Hence, national governments have to assist domestic industry by providing direct and indirect subsidies through management assistance, export assistance, skills development, assistance with research & development as well as information gathering and dissemination. Gov ernments have to do much more then merely enacting legislation if a nation is to continue to have a viable domestic industry. This brief essay takes a look at what a national government can do in order to assist domestic industry in the era of trade liberalisation. In an era of international trade liberalisation, there is intense market competition for goods and services because manufacturers and service providers from all over the world try to sell their manufactured products and services in a national market. As a result of the global movement towards trade liberalisation, nations are required to progressively reduce their tariffs to permit market access to producers and suppliers from all over the world. Such access means that the domestic industry is required to compete with the products and services of international manufacturers and service providers on quality, price

The Man with the Twisted Lip by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle :: English Literature

The Man with the Twisted Lip by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle In ‘The Man with the Twisted Lip’, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used the disrespect of the Victorian public with regards to the Police to create his own successful amateur detective. The reason for this clear lack of respect is that the notorious Jack the Ripper was roaming the streets of London, and the police could do nothing to stop him. Indeed Jack the Ripper was never caught by the Police. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also uses the fear that Victorians had of the knowledge that Jack the Ripper was present on London streets. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle uses words such as, â€Å"lurking† and â€Å"sluggishly† to describe Upper Swandam Lane and the way the River Thames flowing, adding to the feeling of disquiet and revulsion within the reader. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also describes Upper Swandam Lane as being, â€Å"vile† All three of these words make the reader feel uncomfortable about the settings because the words represent life and creatures that are evil and dangerous. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also tells us of a, â€Å"low room thick and heavy with the opium smoke† In the Victorian period, opium was legal and was smoked by many people. The thick smoke in the room made it difficult to breathe clean air. The word, â€Å"sottish† is used to describe an opium smoker who clearly has no control over his mind and body. This could be a hint that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did not approve of the smoking of opium that took place in that time. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also describes those opium smokers as being, â€Å"bodies lying in strange fantastic poses, bowed shoulders, bent knees, heads thrown back and chins pointed upwards, with here and there a dark, lack-lustre eye turned on the newcomer† This sentence gives the reader a further suggestion that the people in the opium den are intoxicated under the influence of opium, and also Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s dislike of the habit of opium smoking. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle describes the path down to the opium den as, â€Å"a steep flight of steps leading down to a black gap like the mouth of a cave† This could be likened to a descent into hell, reminding the reader of the dreadful descent into the railway cutting in ‘The Signalman’, and suggesting that the opium den is not a place where religious people could be found. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle manipulates the importance that Victorians placed on social values and respectability. The Victorians were very proud people, and knew that money meant respect. This is shown when the character of Neville St.

How I Changed My High School Environment - 1209 Words

I was not very excited to take the UNV 100 class when I had to register for classes last Fall semester, and I thought it is a waste of credits. However, since the first day of class and overtime I changed my mind completely. I changed my mind due to several reasons I will be discussing in this paper. The main reason is that I found the environment of this class very similar to my high school environment, which was a STEM high school. In other words, I have always been challenged in this class to think critically and solve problems ranging from very small problems to big controversial social issues. And this is a skill that I learned and have been practicing in high school, but in a science context. Nevertheless, I did not recognize the†¦show more content†¦For example, the â€Å"Streetcar Named Desire† movie was a real example of how theatre was a very powerful of art that addressed one of the big social issues at that time in the US. I also liked other examples and movies that we watched in class regarding theatre as a very influential form of art that was banned and faced by the power of the government. The government did that because they recognized the negative impact of theatre on their benefits and its impact in raising people’s awareness. In addition , I liked the movie in which orchestra members were interviewed to talk about how music is a form of art that bring people together and may solve big issues. I liked that many of the orchestra members were from different backgrounds and from different cultures as well; however, they all agreed that playing music is a very important aspect of their lives. In my view, that was a very good example of how music is a very powerful art tool that touch people’s feelings no matter where they are from and it may also contribute in bringing people together. A very important thing that I want to reflect on is that we, as students, were involved in this class. We had several projects where we had to present, participate in and model certain social issues and solve them either as individuals or as groups. For example, when the class represented art institutions which had a very limited â€Å"imaginary† budget to raiseShow MoreRelatedMy First Year As A College Student846 Words   |  4 Pagesthemselves on how to live on their own efficiently.
